Near infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS) seems to be an ideal non-invasive technique for the postoperatively monitoring of plastic surgery in recent study. In this paper, a system utilizing near infra-red reflectance spectroscopy to access the blood perfusion and oxygen supply in skin was described. The bean-is of light were transmitted by optical fibers so that the distance between light source and detector could be adjusted easily. The forearm occlusion experiments on human body were performed using this system. In venous occlusion the concentration of both oxygenated hemoglobin and deoxygenated hemoglobin increased significantly because of the Venous outflow was impeded. In total occlusion the oxygenaed hemoglobin concentration decreased, deoxygenated hemoglobin concentration increased and the blood volume remained unchanged. The experimental results indicate that NIRS is potential to monitor the circulation of skin flap, especially the venous flow.
