SM(3) is a sulfated glycolipid, in which the neutral sugar chain is modified by sulfate residue. The amount of sulfated glycolipids in normal liver cell is very small, however, highly expression of SM(3) is found in human heptacellular carcinoma (HCC) cells and tissues. Therefore, it is suggested that SM3 may be the important cancer associated carbohydrate antigen of HCC. In this paper, one spacer-armed analogue of a disaccharide SM(3) was synthesized for the first time via multi-step synthetic method. The target compound is suitable for conjugation to a carrier by the presence of a 2-amino ethyl spacer, and therefore is useful for application in immunological study later.
